Sapphire Medical Foundation is pleased to announce the commencement of our first grant funding round on 20th January 2020. This marks the first occasion by which we shall be able to provide the financial support to cover the costs of treatment for one year of therapy with cannabis-based medicinal products.
Dr Michael Platt, trustee of the Foundation, expressed his excitement at being able to open the first funding round: ‘As a pain specialist with over 23 years experience in treating chronic pain of various conditions I have come to learn of the tremendous impact that cannabis can afford some of my patients. Due to the prohibitive costs associated with cannabis-based medicinal products patients across a range of conditions have been forced to seek alternative sources of cannabis through which to self-medicate. Unfortunately, the position of NICE and NHS England has not helped to improve the situation much for patients. I am excited to announce the opening of our first grant application round through which we hope to remove the financial barriers that are so prohibitory in obtaining these medications.’
